Installing Makai
Makai is not signed with an Apple developer certificate, so macOS will refuse to open it the first time and you have to let it through by hand. These are the steps.
- Download the zip file.
- Double-click the zip file to unzip it.
- Drag Makai into your Applications folder.
- Open Makai.
- macOS will say it cannot be opened. Close that message, then open System Settings > Privacy & Security.
- Scroll down to Security. There is a line there about Makai being blocked, with an Open Anyway button. Click it.
- Confirm when macOS asks you to, and Makai will open.
You will do this again
This is not a one-off. macOS treats every new build as a new unsigned app, so the same steps apply each time you install an update.
Control-click no longer works
Older instructions tell you to Control-click the app and choose Open. That shortcut was removed in macOS 15, so on macOS 15 and later the Open Anyway button in System Settings is the way through.
